The visco seal retrofit is a highn precission item. The whole assembly consisting of four items, including the Seal cage, will be packed carefully to avoid any type of damage during transit. Four individual packing will be given to each one of the components of the visco seal retrofit, each measuring1 meter by 1 meter, with thickness of the packing to 300mm. Separate packing will be provided for instrumentation for measuring the seal oil flow and coolant flow to the heat exchanger, thermocouples

VISCO SEAL RETROFIT FOR BOOSTER COMPRESSAR HANDLING TOXIC FLUID
Visco seal as a retrofit to the Booster compressor at Manuguru site in Andhra Pradesh State, was designed as per the computer programme evolved for the purpose. Effect of radial clearance on the pressure generating capacity of the high and low pressure sides of the seal was studied. Corresponding heat generated due to viscous shear effects of the seal was calculated. Based on this data, insitu cooling arrangement was designed using dual spiral tube assembly. In addition, the outer annular area was chosen for heat transfer jacket along the seal. Proto type seal was manufactured using special grade Stainless steel of 316 specification known for its corrosion resistance. Difficulties during machining, of the helical square threads and improving the surface finish to a high order were met after trials. The Visco seal retrofit was assembled. The prototype seal was assembled in the test rig designed for the purpose with a variable speed DC motor as prime mover. The test rig was suitably instrumented for temperature, pressure and flow measurements, Photograph of the Viscoseal retrofit is enclosed. The test results showed excellant pressure-generating capacity of the seal with increased radial clearance.The seal oil temperature rise, was controlled by external heat exchanger. Advanced techniques of in situ cooling of seal oil in the HP sealing ring, is being worked out. The non-contact,energy-efficient Visco seal, performed very wwell and is suited for replacement of existing ring-type shaft seal presently in use in the Booster compressar. The main difficulty is to get the four stainless steel 316 grade forgings, required for machining the visco -seal retrofit components.As the helical square threads are machined along the inner diameter of the sealing components, high degree of surface finish was not attainable, particularly along the groove track where the seal oil gets pumped and also pressurised due to the hydrodynamic action of the rotor when it rotates at 2880 Revolutions per minute.
